It is important that plants and roots are identified correctly. Some plants are poisonous, or look similar to those that can be helpful. Always be very sure about the identification before trying to use a plant to help you.
Knowing a variety of plant species from various areas may come in handy one day. The same plants don't grow in the same regions, so if you ever needed help and weren't familiar with the plant life, you may be in trouble!
Not all plants grow year-round, so being familiar with medicinal plants from different seasons can be useful in case of emergency.
Creating a relationship with local people about their plant habitat can not only be beneficial to you, but also to the locals. As a scientist, you can learn about local plants from people who are around them the most. Others aren't aware of the value of the local plants, so as a scientist, you can help them to learn!
If I were found without traditional medicines, I would definitely trust my knowledge of local flora in order to treat an affliction. I've done enough research and gained so much knowledge about plants, that I would trust myself in any kind of emergency situation.

  1. it's easy to forget that the "roots" of even modern Medicine lie with plants! time to get back to basics! can you imagine living 200 years ago and maybe having to hunt, harvest, prepare, and administer your own medicine??

  2. Emma, have you seen anything that can treat IBS, Raynaud's, or sinus infections? Some things I've run across that nothing seems to help! Thanks.
